In recent years, medical tourism has become a buzzword, with many seeking aesthetic enhancements and medical procedures abroad, particularly in countries like Turkey.

From the glimmer of veneers to the contours of Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs), the allure of overseas operations has captivated countless individuals.

However, a notable trend is emerging within South Africa as celebrities and influencers begin to champion local medical professionals over international destinations.

“The Mommy Club” star Mpumi Mophatlane, affectionately known as Mrs Mops, is one of the latest local stars to reveal her preference for procedures in South Africa.

Recently, she proudly exhibited her BBL journey, which was performed by a trusted local surgeon. Following in her footsteps is influencer Vanessa Padi, who has captured the public’s attention after sharing her extraordinary experience in obtaining a stunning set of veneers.

Padi took to TikTok, showcasing the highlights of her dental transformation at House of Smiles, where renowned cosmetic dentist Dr Khongelani Ntshani worked meticulously to create her enviable “Hollywood smile”.

In a candid clip, Padi expressed her excitement, saying, “New smile, who is this?” as she thanked her dentist for the new look that has seemingly reshaped her confidence.

Veneers typically come with a hefty price tag, and Padi revealed to her followers that her newfound smile cost between R150 000 and R200 000. Despite the significant investment, the influencer was quick to affirm that the result was worth every cent.

Many users took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their newfound appreciation for local

One user, @BassieLastrassi, noted, “Saw a local influencer get veneers done locally and shame, there’s no need for us to participate in medical tourism, our doctors are good here.”

Another commentator, @IamThabangX, echoed this sentiment, stating, “People underestimate South African professionals; across all industries, we are amongst the best you could find in the world.”

The dialogue culminated with user @GoodHairDiaries highlighting the benefits of receiving procedures locally, citing that many plastic surgeons are unwilling to work on enhancements done elsewhere.

This shift in mindset underscores a broader societal trend valuing local expertise and talent in an industry previously influenced by the allure of international cosmetic cultures.

As more South Africans embrace their homegrown professionals, local celebrities like Padi and Mrs Mops are pushing the narrative that exceptional medical care is attainable on home soil.
