Government allocates land to resettle people affected by floods, landslides in Hanang

Date:

DAR ES SALAAM – Tanzanian authorities announced on Friday that they have set aside 100 acres of land to resettle the people affected by landslides and floods in the northeastern region of Manyara.

The landslides and floods hit Hanang District of the region on Dec. 3, 2023, caused by torrential rains, leaving 89 people dead and more than 5,600 others homeless, according to the country’s official data.

Mobhare Matinyi, the chief government spokesperson and director of the Tanzania Information Services, said the government has started the process of building houses for the people affected by the disaster on the 100 acres of land.

“About 89 houses were destroyed by the deluge,” Matinyi told a news conference in Tanzania’s commercial hub of Dar es Salaam.

He said 226 plots for the housing project have already been surveyed, adding that 26 plots have been surveyed for residential and commercial use, and 17 plots for social services, including a dispensary, a graveyard, a market and a primary school.
